Crispy Air Fryer Blooming Onion Petals

An irresistible appetizer that brings the iconic taste of a blooming onion into your home with minimal oil and maximum flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion (such as Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • Buttermilk or a milk alternative – enough to submerge the onion (about 1 cup)
  • Olive oil spray (for misting)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon dried oregano or thyme
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or chili powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and trim the stem side to ensure it sits flat. Slice it vertically into 12-16 petals, stopping half an inch from the root.
  2. Soak in Buttermilk: Place the onion in buttermilk, ensuring it is fully submerged. Soak for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In one bowl, combine flour with spices. In second bowl, mix breadcrumbs with optional Parmesan or herbs.
  4. Dredge the Onion: Remove onion from buttermilk, dripping off the excess. Dredge in flour mixture, dip in buttermilk, then coat with breadcrumb mixture.
  5. Air Fry the Onion: Spray coated onion petals with olive oil. Cook in air fryer at 380°F (193°C) for 12-15 minutes, shaking halfway through.

Notes

Consider adding cayenne for a spicy kick and use fresh, firm onions for the best results.
