  • 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 lb. ground beef, lean
  • 1 cup canned tomato sauce
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil until shimmering.
  2. Add the chopped onion and red bell pepper. Stir occasionally for about 10 to 15 minutes until they soften and turn golden brown.
  3. Pour in the ketchup and continue cooking for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently until it reduces to a thick paste.
  4. Stir in the chopped garlic and chili powder for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the apple cider vinegar, yellow mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper and cook for another minute.
  6. Raise the heat to high, add the ground beef, and cook, stirring frequently, until browned—around 5 minutes.
  7. Pour in the canned tomato sauce, bring to a boil, and adjust seasonings if needed.
  8. Spoon the beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and enjoy your messy feast!

Notes

For a healthier twist, consider ground turkey or chicken, low-sugar ketchup, or whole-grain buns.
